Police Report: March 22, 2011

• Emory Police Department (EPD) responded on March 12 around midnight to a request by a Resident Advisor at Longstreet-Means Hall to remove a disruptive male student. The student was from Columbia University, and had arrived unannounced to see an ex-girlfriend who did not wish to see him. The RA was able to escort him from the building without additional problems, after which the student contacted a friend from the Georgia Institute of Technology to take him off campus. The ex-girlfriend said she did not wish to prosecute.

• EPD made an arrest for burglary at midnight on March 12 on Briarcliff Campus. The subject was observed exiting a cottage that had a broken window when the officers arrived. When the officers identified themselves as police, the subject began to run away, but he was apprehended behind the cottage. Officers found a blue Ford van at the location, and discovered copper pipes inside, which appeared to have been cut from the ceiling of the cottage from which the subject had exited. The subject informed the officer that there was another person working with him, and the Dekalb County Police Department canine officer checked the area for any additional subjects, but none were found. The subject’s car was impounded, and the subject was charged with burglary and obstruction because he attempted to escape from the police officer. He was also issued a criminal trespass from the University.

• EPD responded on March 11 at 5:21 a.m. to the 10th floor of the Tower Apartments on Clairmont Campus. A male student there was observed tearing papers off dorm room doors and using loud profanity on the floor. He was not cooperative when officers approached the scene. Because he was not compliant and continued to cause a disturbance, the officers arrested him for public intoxication and transported him to the Dekalb County jail.

Police Record: March 18, 2011

  • Emory Police Department (EPD) officers responded to an alarm that had been set off at Candler Mansion on Briarcliff Campus at March 4 at 1:27 a.m. The officers entered the building and announced their presence but received no response; upon further inspection, others found five students hiding in the building. The students stated that they had entered through a broken window and had come to the location with the intent to use the ouija board they had brought along. The officers cited the students with unauthorized entry into a vacated building.
  • EPD received a report of unauthorized entry into Harris Hall on March 4 at 11:18 p.m. The report came from a student who had ordered food from Hunan Dragon at 8 p.m. that evening. when the student found out that another Harris Hall resident had ordered at the same time but received her food instead, the first student asked the driver about her order, and the driver said that he would soon return with it The first student later went downstairs to wait for the driver to bring her order, but soon noticed him leaving the building empty-handed. when she asked the driver where her food was, he told her he had left it on her desk. Someone else had apparently held open the residence hall’s door for the driver, who had asked other students for directions to the student’s room, where he had knocked on the door and, upon receiving no reply, left the order on the student’s desk. The case has been turned over to EPD for additional investigation.

Police Report: February 15, 2011

• A visitor to the University contacted the Emory Police Department (EPD) on Feb. 9 at 7:40 p.m. to report the loss of her Toshiba laptop and computer bag at the Michael Street parking deck. She had been on her cell phone when she placed the items on the floor of the parking deck and then left the location. When she discovered that her belongings were missing, she returned to where she had left them but could not find them. The laptop and bag were valued at a total of $950.

• A student called EPD to report the loss of a black and white cloth purse — designed to look like an oversized cassette tape — that may have been left in the women’s restroom on the first floor of Callaway Hall on Feb. 8 or 9. The purse, valued at $50, had a wooden pillbox inside that was valued at $10 and bottles of prescription medication valued at $100 in total.

• A female student contacted EPD to report an incident of theft by taking that took place at the Woodruff P.E. Center (WoodPEC) sometime between Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. and Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. The student stated that she had locked her wallet and iPod Touch in a locker in the women’s basketball team’s locker room. When she returned, the items were missing. The lost wallet was valued at $50 and contained a driver’s license, Visa credit card and $50 cash. The iPod was valued at $200. The case has been turned over to an investigator.

• A female student contacted EPD on Feb. 8 to report that she had lost a $100 bill somewhere on campus between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. that day. She stated that the bill, which had been in her pocket, may have been lost somewhere between the sorority lodges, Cox Hall and the WoodPEC.

Police Report: February 8, 2011

  • The Emory Police Department (EPD) received a call about an accident between two vehicles that occurred at Parking Deck E at Clairmont Campus on Jan. 29 some time between 3:52 p.m. and midnight. A female student was driving a black Honda toward the parking deck’s exit, while a male student was backing his blue Chrysler with Michigan tags into a parking space, when the two students’ cars collided. At the time of the call, neither student wished to file a police report.
  • EPD officers responded to a call about a fight between 20 people at the Sigma Chi (SigChi) fraternity house on Jan. 30 between 2:00 and 4:30 a.m.  By the time the officers arrived, there was no active fight at the location. The victim stated that he had been at Maggie’s Bar and Grill when he became involved in a verbal argument. Members of Sigma Nu (SigNu) fraternity who had been engaged in the original argument at Maggie’s reportedly went to the SigChi house upon returning to campus, and the fight apprently ensued from that point. The victim’s face was swollen and he had sustained cuts. He was transported to Emory University Hospital, but he said he was not interested in pressing charges. The incident has been turned over to an investigator.
  • EPD officers arrived at Turman Hall on Jan. 30 at 2:32 a.m. in response to a call that a male student had passed out in a second floor bathroom. The caller was concerned because the student had recently had some sort of surgery. The officers, who had to force their way into the bathroom area, found the student on the floor, unconscious. DeKalb Medical and Fire Rescue transported him to Emory Hospital.
  • An EPD officer responded to a complaint from a library staff member of a suspicious person at Woodruff Library on Feb. 1 at midnight. The staff member stated that the white subject, who gave an Atlanta address, did not appear to belong in the area and exhibited strange behavior. When the staff member confronted the subject to ask why he was at the location, the subject became argumentative. When the officer arrived and made contact with the subject at a computer terminal, the subject stated that he is not affiliated with the University but comes to the library to use the computers. In the EPD officer’s presence, the staff member advised the subject as to the rules for use of the library and the subject left without further incident.

Police Record: February 4, 2011

  • As they patrolled the Goizueta Business School on Jan. 28 at 4:08 p.m., Emory Police Department (EPD) officers stopped an individual that they believed had been sleeping in the building, based on descriptions of the subject in previous calls from witnesses. EPD issued the subject a trespass warning and asked him not to return to campus. He was allowed to leave the area that night.
  • EPD officers again found the individual who had received the trespass warning – a black male subject who is approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall and 215 pounds – in Cannon Chapel on Feb. 3 at 11:16 p.m. The officers arrested the subject, who was charged with criminal trespassing and transported to the DeKalb County Jail.
  • A student contacted EPD on Jan. 26 at 3:29 p.m. to report an online scam. She stated that she had found a job, via Craigslist, as a “personal assistant.” The “employer” sent her a check for a large sum of money, requesting that she first deposit it into her checking account and then send a money order to England from her account. She then received a second check and was asked to perform the same set of tasks. But when she tried to deposit the second check, her bank informed her that her account had been put on hold because the first check had bounced. This case is now under investigation.
  • An EPD officer responded to Glenn Memorial Church on Jan. 28 at 1:07 p.m. in response to a call about a suspicious person. According to the caller, a 64-year-old, white male subject had entered the building and then refused to leave when asked. The subject told the EPD officer that he was heading to his car, which was parked at Oxford Road and North Decatur Road, and that he was living at Atlanta Mission. The officer assisted him with locating his vehicle, and he departed campus without further incident.

Police Record: January 25, 2011

  • Emory Police Department (EPD) officers received a call on Dec. 28 at 7:40 p.m. that a tall, black male subject was attempting to flag down cars at the intersection of Oxford Road and Eagle Row. The subject, who identified himself as “Eugene,” was asking drivers for money for his family in what appeared to be a scam, according to witnesses. The officers were unable to locate the subject.
  • A custodial supervisor found an unknown male subject sleeping on the sixth floor of the 1599 Clifton Road building at midnight on Dec. 29. The subject was not wearing any shoes and left the building as soon as the supervisor spotted him.
  • An EPD officer responded to a call about vehicle damage at Starvine parking deck on Jan. 6 at 6:04 p.m. The owner of the vehicle stated that an unleashed dog had struck and damaged the side of the car. A woman had been walking the dog nearby without a leash. After the incident, she retrieved the dog and took it away to a veterinarian, but she left her business card with the car owner.
  • EPD officers responded to a call about a black male subject sleeping on a sofa in a second floor room of the Dobbs University Center (DUC) on Jan. 8 at 3:19 p.m. The subject was not a student, and EPD had arrested him once previously at Emory University Hospital Midtown. He said that he was there at the DUC to retrieve property. Officers returned the property, which EPD had been holding, and escorted the subject off-campus without any problems.
  • A female student called EPD on Jan. 10 and stated that unknown persons had entered her apartment — located in Building G of the Clairmont Residential Center — and removed a suitcase filled with clothes sometime between Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m. and Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. The total value of the contents of the suitcase is approximately $1600. EPD officers found no signs of forced entry, but facilities management or maintenance workers had evidently entered the apartment on Jan. 6 to change a filter. The case has been turned over to an investigator.

Police Report: December 7, 2010

  • Emory Police Department (EPD) officers made contact with an Asian female subject at the Candler School of Theology on Dec. 3 at 10:15 a.m. The subject was issued a temporary trespass from EPD and was escorted off campus after she repeatedly tried to obtain services from a certain office on the fourth floor. She left the area without further incident. The subject, a former Emory employee, has come to this fourth floor office multiple times over a number of years and has been issued a criminal trespass previously from EPD.
  • EPD received a call on Dec. 4 at 1:00 a.m. from the roommate of an inebriated 18-year-old student who had struck his head on the floor. Emory Emergency Medical Services (EEMS) and a DeKalb Rural Metro Unit 1 ambulance arrived at Turman Hall and transported the intoxicated student to Emory University Hospital. Later, after treatment, the student was allowed to leave the hospital, but his roommate called EPD again at 3:38 a.m. because the student was vomiting repeatedly. The Division of Campus Life was notified.
  • EPD officers found an intoxicated 20-year-old student bleeding from his head and lying on the ground by the door of the Sigma Chi fraternity house on Dec. 4 at 11:30 p.m. DeKalb Rural Metro Unit 1 treated the student at the location and transported him to Atlanta Medical Center. Campus Life was notified.
  • EPD officers patrolling in the area of Asbury Circle noticed on Dec. 5 at 12:30 a.m. that the large menorah in the center of the circle had fallen down. They retrieved the pieces of the menorah and turned it over to Chabad Emory. EPD officers also found that the menorah had toppled over on Dec. 6 at 1:30 a.m., at which point they again returned it to Chabad Emory. It is unclear whether the menorah fell down due to windy weather or some other accident.

Police Report: December 3, 2010

  • A resident advisor (RA) detected the odor of marijuana at Alabama Hall on Nov. 29 at 1:05 a.m. and saw at least five male students smoking in the area of the hall’s fire escape and some nearby benches. When the RA approached the students, they refused to show him identification and walked past him. The RA contacted the Emory Police Department (EPD) about the incident, but EPD could not locate the group.
  • EPD received an accident report on Nov. 30 from an Emory Hospital staff member who was hit by the right side mirror of a car as it drove past on Clifton Road. A witness stated that the staff member had just exited a Cliff shuttle bus and was crossing the street when the accident took place. The driver stopped her car, a 2000 Toyota Avalon, when she found out what had happened. The side mirror broke upon contact with the pedestrian.
  • A resident of the Tower Apartments on Clairmont Campus found an unknown male subject standing outside of the door to her apartment on Nov. 30 at 11:45 p.m. The subject, a white male with dirty blond hair, appeared to weigh about 180 pounds and was wearing a dark shirt. When the resident entered her apartment, she asked her roommates if they knew the subject, but no one present recognized him. The subject soon left the area but later returned, wearing a different shirt, and appeared to be standing outside the door. The residents then called EPD when they realized that someone was turning the door handle, as if in an attempt to open the door. EPD made a check of the area but did not find anyone matching the description of the subject. the Division of Campus Life was notified, and the case has been turned over to an investigator.
  • EPD received a report on Dec. 2 at 1:15 p.m. that the DeKalb County sheriff’s office arrested Khpulwak Zafarzai on EPD’s outstanding warrant for burglary. Zafarzai, who is not affiliated with the University, was arrested and taken to magistrate court for a burglary that occurred at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house on Nov. 21 between midnight and 1 a.m. EPD had issued Zafarzai a criminal trespass warrant.

Police Report: November 2, 2010

  • The assistant director of the Student Activity & Academic Center (SAAC) met with Emory Police Department (EPD) officers to report that five lockers in the men’s locker room on the first floor of the SAAC had been damaged sometime between Oct. 23 and Oct. 25. Someone had pulled on the lockers’ latch fixtures until the lockers were hanging loosely off of the wall.
  • EPD received a report from SAAC staff of a suspicious person who had visited the SAAC several times during a few weeks. The male subject, who appeared to be six feet tall and to weigh 300 pounds, had been asked repeatedly to leave the SAAC because he did not seem to be affiliated with the University and did not have authorized access to the building. EPD officers located the subject on Oct. 26 at 10:18 p.m. and explained to him that he would have to leave the location.
  • A tree branch fell on a vehicle at the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house on Oct. 28 at 12:50 a.m. The branch appeared to have fallen from a tree at the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house. The impact bent the roof and shattered the sunroof and windshield of the black 2005 Volvo, which had New Jersey tags.
  • The Lowergate visitors’ parking lot contacted EPD on Oct. 28 at 9:10 a.m. to report the theft of four boots from the wheels of one vehicle. The parking office had placed the boots on the vehicle on Oct. 26 because its owner had incurred $800 worth of parking fees. On Oct. 27, the vehicle was missing, and the parking office received a call from someone who stated that the boots would eventually be dropped off at the office. The boots are still missing and are valued at $200 each
  • EPD received a call on Oct. 28 at 1:20 p.m. that a suspicious person was in the area of the Barnes & Noble bookstore on campus. A bookstore employee had recently requested a protective order against the individual, who is not affiliated with the University. The individual left the area when a bookstore supervisor asked him to do so.

Police Report: October 19, 2010

  • An Emory University Hospital staff member contacted the Emory Police Department (EPD) on Oct. 5 at 5:25 p.m. to report that someone had stolen medical equipment from Emory Clinic Building B. The staff member stated that someone had removed 30 stainless steel freezer racks and one stainless steel step from a locked closet.
  • The facilities operations manager for Emory Clinic Building B contacted EPD Oct. 11 at 2:59 p.m. to report that someone had removed metal fixtures, metal-framed pictures and office equipment from the loading dock at Buildings B and C. The manager stated that the incident took place sometime between Oct. 7 and Oct. 8. The case is now under investigation.
  • An Emory University Hospital staff member contacted EPD on Oct. 12 at 11:41 p.m. to report damage to her vehicle, which had been parked in the Turman Residential Center parking lot. She stated that she had found pine straw and rocks covering the front and back windows of her blue 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The staff member also stated that a pink gooey substance was smeared on the driver’s-side mirror. The dollar amount of the damages is unknown.
  • A post-doctorate fellow called EPD on Oct. 13 at 10:42 a.m. to report the theft of a white transfer hose from the fourth floor of the Winship Cancer Institute. The hose was used to transfer liquid nitrogen from one container to another. The fellow stated that the theft occurred sometime between Oct. 4 at 11:30 a.m. and Oct. 6 at 11:30 a.m. He also stated that the hose was probably taken because it was made of metal.
