Police Report: Friday, March 19, 2010

  • An 18-year-old female Emory student reported that someone had been using her EmoryCard to obtain goods from Domino’s without her permission. The student told Emory Police Department (EPD) that between Feb. 21 at 7:23 p.m. and Feb. 27 at 7:10 p.m., someone charged $18, $3.60, $38 and $5 to her EmoryCard account. There was no other information at the time of this report.
  • EPD arrested a 30-year-old male on March 10 at 9:08 a.m. The man, who is unaffiliated with the University, had previously been on campus and was taken into custody by EPD officers due to an outstanding warrant for his arrest. He has failed to appear on his previous charges and was further issued a criminal trespassing warning upon his arrest. He was taken to DeKalb County Jail without further incident. The offender is an Indian male, 5 feet 5 inches, 143 pounds, has black hair and brown eyes and is a resident of Pennsylvania.
  • EPD received a complaint from the parent of a male Emory student on March 11 at 4:28 p.m. The parent stated that he had received a parking ticket while visiting his son at Clairmont Campus and that there was no place for parents to park at the location. He further stated that his son tried to make parking arrangements previously and that he had not received any information. EPD officers offered to go to Clairmont Campus to assist the parent, but he refused their help at that time.
  • A 19-year-old male Emory student reported that someone had removed his book bag, containing
    his credit card, from outside of the cubbies on the fourth floor of the Woodruff P. E. Center on March 12 between 2 and 2:45 p.m. There were no fraudulent charges made to the card, and the student cancelled the card at that time. The student is a resident of Eagle Row.
  • Someone stole an 8-series blue bicycle with a sheepskin seat cover from the bicycle rack outside of
    Evans Hall sometime between March 8 at 2 p.m. and March 15 at 8:45 a.m. The bicycle’s U-lock had also been removed at that time. The total value of the theft is $325.

Police Record: Friday, March 5

  • A theft of lost or mislaid property occurred on Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. from the Emory Hotel and Conference Center. A visitor stayed at the Hotel and Conference Center for business and left a two-carat diamond wedding band on the dresser and did not take the ring with her when she checked out. The visitor later called the hotel and told them she was positive that she left the ring in her room when she left and that it is valued at $4,000.
  • Emory Police Department (EPD) officers responded to the 1000 block of Ridgewood Drive on Feb. 24 at 6:16 p.m. and observed the driver of a 2005 silver Honda sleeping in the front seat of his car with the engine still running. Officers made contact with the subject and detected a strong odor of alcohol on his person. Officers identified the subject as a 21-year-old male Emory student who was extremely intoxicated and became disorderly with police officers. The student was cited for public intoxication and transported to Emory University Hospital. His court date has been set for March 19.
  • EPD received a noise complaint on Feb. 24 at 8:19 p.m. A resident of Luckie Lane stated that continual noise was coming from the Emory property. EPD officers determined that a fire alarm was coming from one of the high rise buildings belonging to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC was notified of the fire alarm.
  • EPD received a report of a person down due to alcohol intoxication and responded to Harris Hall on Feb. 25 at 2:05 a.m. Officers arrived and identified an 18-year-old male Emory student who was heavily intoxicated. He was transported to Emory University Hospital for medical treatment and the Division of Campus Life was notified of the incident.
  • EPD made contact with a person wandering through the third floor of the Woodruff Health Science Center Administration Building on Feb. 25 at 12:34 p.m. The subject stated that he was trying to located Human Resources and was allowed to leave the building without further incident. The subjects is a black male, age 56, six feet, 190 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He is a resident of Stone Mountain.
  • EPD received a report of criminal trespassing that occurred at 6 Eagle Row on Feb. 26 at 2:26 a.m. Officers arrived and found a broken window. The House Director at the location told officers that they heard the breaking glass and came out of their room, where they heard a person running. Officers found smashed tomato on the ground and determined it had been thrown against the window. Facilities Management arrived and repaired the window, which sustained $150 in damages. The Division of Campus Life was notified of the incident.

Police Record: Friday, October 30

  • A bicycle was stolen outside of the Whitehead Research Building on Oct. 19 at approximately 12 p.m. The victim stated that the blue Fuji bicycle, valued at $300, had been secured to the rack with a U-lock, but that both the lock and the bicycle were missing when the victim returned.
  • A 26-year-old female Emory student lost her footing while entering a shuttle bus in front of the Dental School Building on Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. The student fell backward and hit the steps. She was taken to the Emory University Hospital by a coworker for further treatment.
  • Emory Police Department received a call of a person down due to alcohol intoxication on Oct. 22 at 12:36 p.m. EPD located an intoxicated 30-year-old male student who had slurred speech and could not stand. The student told officers he was celebrating with other business school students after completing exams. Emory Emergency Medical Services and DeKalb County Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene and brought the student to the emergency room at the Emory University Hospital. The student informed officers that he had never been intoxicated before this incident.
  • An 18-year-old student at Thomas hall reportedly walked into a door as it was being closed on Oct. 23 at 3:25 a.m. The student entered a friend’s room as the door slammed, and the student’s friend stated they didn’t know the student was entering the room at that time. The student stated that they did not want any medical treatment.
  • EPD officers issued a criminal trespass citation to Sanjib Kumar Mohapatro, a male subject unaffiliated with the University. EPD initially received a report of an Asian-Indian male subject in the area of Asbury Circle. He was reportedly asking other students where he could live. EPD made contact with the subject and he became irritable and uncooperative at that time. He told officers that he was homeless and that he had no affiliation with the University. This is the second incident involving this same male subject, and the first incident occurred on Sept. 17. Officers issued the subject a citation and escorted him off campus. EPD describes the male subject as a 38-year-old male, six feet tall and weighing approximately 190 pounds. The subject has black curly hair and brown eyes. He is a resident of Tucker, Ga.

Friday, September 18

  • A 41-year-old staff member reported that a male subject has been harassing him by showing up unannounced at his vehicle in Lowergate Parking Deck and wanting to talk. The subject has also been texting the staff member and attempting to contact him at home. The subject has not been aggressive toward the complainant. The staff member told Emory Police Department that this harassing behavior went on between Aug. 30 at 8:30 p.m. and Sept. 6 at 7:45 p.m. EPD was able to make outside referrals to resources for the staff member to handle the situation.
  • EPD officers identified three male Emory students on the lawn of the Law School on Sept. 7 at 5:05 a.m. One of the students was very heavily intoxicated and had slurred speech. Officers also observed a bottle of Bacardi rum located near the students at the location. One of the students stated that he lived at 8 Eagle Row and another student admitted to driving the golf cart to pick up the other student. They took the golf cart, belonging to Campus Services, from a Facilities Management building and rode to pick up the third male student. The three students were ages 19, 20 and 21. The Division of Campus Life was notified.
  • EPD received a report of public indecency on Sept. 8 at 11:27 p.m. A University staff member who works for Facilities Management stated that they saw two nude male subjects run up Eagle Row. No further information was provided.
  • EPD responded to a case of criminal trespassing at Clairmont Residential Center Building F on Sept. 10 at 7:44 p.m. A 20-year-old female Emory student told officers that she had two male visitors in her apartment whom she knew from high school. The visitors reportedly stole some of the complainant’s property while they were in her apartment. The student told police that she asked the visitors to leave and they refused. The subjects finally left the location when the student called EPD.
  • A motor vehicle theft occurred on Sept. 11 at 2:23 a.m. from Turman Residential Center. The night manager for Facilities Management, 52, parked his 1997 white Ford van at Turman when he was approached by a male subject. The subject asked the Facilities Management employee for a ride to Clairmont, but he refused. The employee went into Turman and when he returned, the van was missing. EPD located the vehicle in front of the turnaround near Building C on Clairmont Campus. The keys to the vehicle were missing. The information has been turned over to a detective, who processed the van at the location.
  • EPD responded to Clairmont Tower Apartments on Sept. 11 at 10:27 p.m. after someone reported that residents in the lower levels were throwing bottles off the balconies. EPD checked rooms on levels two through six and spoke with the Resident Adviser and residents in a room on the fifth floor. The residents stated that someone had been throwing beer cans from the sixth floor; however, EPD was not able to make contact with whoever had been throwing the cans. The Division of Campus Life was notified.

Tuesday, December 9

  • On Nov. 11 at 5:45 a.m., a car boot was placed on a 1994 blue Ford Ranger because of outstanding unpaid parking tickets valued at $1,549. The owner of the vehicle, a Georgia Tech student, was identified later after the student removed the boot and drove his car away with the boot in the car.
  • On Nov. 14 at 2 p.m., the Emory Police Department received a complaint from a 19-year-old Emory student who stated that she was on the second floor of the Woodruff Library when she was confronted by a black male subject. The subject began to engage her in sexually explicit and inappropriate conversation. The student stated that she reported the information to the Woodruff Library security. Officers arrived at the location but could not locate the subject at that time. On Nov. 26 at 3:36 p.m., EPD officers made contact with the same individual and issued him a criminal trespass warning. Since the subject could not provide a specific reason for being on campus, officers asked him to leave University property. The subject is a black male from Charlotte, NC, described as 6-feet-2-inches, 210 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
  • On Nov. 26 at 12:57 a.m., EPD officers were at 22 Eagle Row on special detail when they observed an individual jump off the roof of a fraternity house and run toward 8 Eagle Row. EPD officers apprehended the individual and identified him as a 19-year-old Emory student and resident of 8 Eagle Row. The student told officers that he was cutting across the roofs to get to the patio of 8 Eagle Row and did not know why he decided to run from officers. The Division of Campus Life was notified.
  • EPD received a report of entering auto that occurred sometime between Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. and Nov. 28 at 12:10 p.m. on the third floor of the Starvine Parking Deck. A 22-year-old Emory student reported that someone damaged the driver’s side window of their 1991 tan Buick Century. Nothing was missing from the vehicle.
  • EPD officers responded to the third floor of Hopkins Hall on Dec. 2 at 5 p.m. at the request of the Resident Adviser at the location. Officers checked one of the rooms in the area and found a small amount of the green leafy substance Cannabis. The room had been searched after the resident had moved out and the substance could not be attributed to anyone specifically.

Tuesday, April 22

  • An incident occurred at the Dobbs University Center mail room on April 8 between 2:45 an d4 p.m. A male student reported that he left the area and returned after he realized he had left his wallet at the location, which included a $200 cell phone, his driver’s license and some credit cards. He could not locate the property when he returned to the mail room. Two companies advised him that purchases has been made to his credit cards since the time of the incident. The case has been turned over to an investigator.
  • Emory Police Department responded to a report of suspicious activity from the Fishbourne Parking Deck on April 9 at 10:06 p.m. An employee contacted EPD to advise that a white male was looking into several vehicles at the location. A student also stated that he saw four white males looking into vehicles at the location. An officer arrived at the location but did not locate the individuals. There were no damages to any vehicles.
  • On April 9 at 11:11 p.m., an officer observed four students had started a bonfire in Lullwater Park. They were having a picnic around the bonfire. The officer advised them that the fire was against University policy and the students that they did no know that the rule existed because they had seen people start fires at the same location. The individuals put the fire out and were escorted out of the area. Campus Life was notified.
  • A 26-year-old visitor to the Emory University Hospital reported that they parked their 2003 BMW in the Physician’s Parking Deck on April 10 at 12 p.m. through the valet services. When their car was returned to them at 2 p.m., the Blackberry PDA located inside the vehicle was missing. The car had no damages and the valet had the keys to the vehicle during the time of the theft. The case has been turned over to an investigator.
  • EPD issued a criminal trespass warning to an individual from Turkey who entered the Law School Library on April 15 to pursue a visiting female law student, originally from Turkey. The male subject, Ibrahim Gok, told officers that he traveled to the United States after he discovered that the female student was getting married to someone else and that he wanted to talk her out of it. Officers escorted the male subject off campus and advised him not to have additional contact with the individual. Campus Life was notified and assisted the female student.

Friday, January 25

  • Emory Police Department received a report of entering a vehicle at the Sigma Nu parking lot that occurred between Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. and Jan. 7 at 11 a.m. The victim, a 24-year-old student, was a guest of the House Director of Sigma Nu and reported that overnight, persons unknown broke into his red Chevrolet Malibu. Even though his wallet and digital camera were in plain view, only items were stolen from the trunk. The items included clothing, books, Kanye West concert tickets, a trumpet, three men’s suits, shoes, a duffel bag, boxing tape, a playstation and some jewelry. The total value of the loss was $4,074.
  • A theft by taking occurred at the Clinic B building sometime between Dec. 28 at 5 p.m. and Jan. 4 at 11 a.m. A 41-year-old staff member reported that a pair of red Crocs, valued at $30, was stolen from an office sometime during that time period. The office had been unlocked at various times during the period.
  • Persons unknown stole a camera from the Clairmont Residential Center sometime between Dec. 21 and Dec. 22 at 2 a.m. A 25-year-old female student told EPD that there had been a party on Dec. 21 and during that time, someone stole the camera, a Nikon digital camera valued at $330.
  • Persons unknown stole a bike from the graduate residential center on Clairmont Campus sometime between Jan. 9 at 9:30 a.m. and Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m. The Denali 20-speed mountain bike, valued at $274, had been locked to the bike rack on Jan. 9 but was no longer attached to the rack when the student returned the next day.
  • EPD received a complaint of criminal trespassing and property damage on Jan. 12 at 3:22 p.m. An unknown number of skateboards were seen in the area around the Dobbs University Center. An officer made contact with nine male skateboarders after pieces of brick were observed in the area, indicating that they had been previously used to damage University property in the area. The individuals were advised of the damage and voluntarily left the area. This is an active case.
  • On Jan. 9 between 6:49 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. police impounded a 1997 white Dodge Ram van that had been parked on the curb at the intersection of Gambrell Drive and Ridgewood Drive. The vehicle lacked proper plates, had a temporary tag that was not legal and had not been displayed properly. The owner also lacked valid insurance.
