November 15, 2011

• The Emory Police Department (EPD) received a call from an Emory staff member on Nov. 9 who stated that there was a male subject walking through the Rollins School of Public Health building on the seventh floor. The subject was attempting to sell books, but he left before the officers arrived and could not be located. Information was turned over to an investigator. 

• On Nov. 8 at around 6 a.m., EPD found a female subject sleeping in a room in the Burlington Road Building. She claimed she was waiting to meet a graduate student there. This is the same woman who is thought to be homeless and has been spotted on campus on numerous occasions. Because of prior incidents, Emory Police officers issued her a permanent trespass, which she signed and said she understood. However, the next day she was found at the Goizueta Business School and was refusing to leave. She was arrested and transported to the DeKalb County Jail.

• In Smith Hall on Nov. 8 around 1 a.m. EPD received a call from a Resident Advisor (RA), who said that there was a non-Emory student sleeping in the hall. The individual was a black male born in 1977 who claimed to be there to meet his girlfriend. According to the RA, individuals are not allowed to be in the residence hall without an Emory student. He cooperated and left the hall.

• In Dobbs Hall on Nov. 7 at around 10 p.m., there was criminal trespass and property damage on the first floor. The complaint came from a male Emory student who said he left his room at around 9 p.m. and when he returned his desk had been flipped over and his sheets ripped off. His printer and various other items were also damaged. However, he does not believe that any of his items were taken, and his roommate’s items were left undisturbed. The situation was handed over to an investigator.

Police Report: April 1, 2011

• The Emory Police Department (EPD) received a report on March 24 at approximately 8 p.m. regarding an individual who was soliciting money from students on Eagle Row. The subject was a black male resident of Atlanta, who had been seen on campus between Atwood Chemistry Building and White Hall previously. He was attempting to take money from students and solicit rides as well. He would tell the students he had “people in the hospital,” and tried to procure money in this manner. The student who reported the subject to EPD had recently been victim of this theft by deception. Officers located and made contact with the subject, interviewed him and charged him with trespassing on Emory campus.

• EPD received a call on March 24 around 12:55 p.m. from a white female student who reported an incident between Asbury Circle and Eagle Row. The victim was driving on Asbury Circle toward Clifton Road when she stopped at a traffic light. The car in front of her failed to go through the light when it changed cycles. After two complete traffic cycles had passed, the student honked her horn at the driver. The driver left his car, asked the student, “what are you doing?” and banged on the student’s truck. He then re-entered his car and allowed another traffic light cycle to pass. Right before the light turned red again, the subject drove from the scene. Officers who responded to the location were not able to make contact with the driver or locate his vehicle, which was a 2004 silver car. The case was turned over to an investigator.

Tuesday, March 24

  • Emory Police Department is looking for a person of interest after a report of possible suspicious behavior. EPD received a call from a staff member on March 12 at 9:41 a.m. who stated that an unknown person was in a semi-public area of the Rollins School of Public Health. The staff member described the indivdiual as a black male with dreadlocks, 5’8”, 165 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. The individual was last seen wearing beige shorts and a green shirt. The indivdiual was also carrying a blue Emory recycling bin and a blue backpack. The staff member confronted the indivdual, who stated that he was not a student, but left the scene before EPD arrived. Officers searched the area but could not locate the individual.
  • EPD received several reports of property damage at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house on March 14, which occurred sometime between midnight and 3 a.m. One 20-year-old student reported that somebody spray painted gold paint on the rear passenger side and top of his gray 2006 Volkswagon Jetta which he had parked in the SAE parking lot. Another student at the SAE house reported that someone spray painted the lion statue on the front lawn of the house and spray painted the cement around the house with derogatory statements. Incidental spray paint marks also got on the area surrounding both the statue and cement. The estimated damage is $400, plus $200 for the other student’s car. Another student reported that someone spray gold paint on the side of his red 1999 Jeep Cherokee, as well as on the front fender. The damage is $200. The case is under investigation and the Division of Campus Life was notified.
  • EDP received a report of solicitation on Marhc 15 between 3 and 9:05 a.m. A hospital staff member reported that a black male subject of slim build wearing a light jacket was in the Dobbs University Center food court asking people for money. EPD arrived at the location and made contact with the individual, who stated that he had been a patient at the Emory University Hospital and was just trying to get money for food because he did not have any. EPD officers asked the subject to leave the area and he complied without further incident.
  • A theft occurred at the Dobbs University Center on March 15 sometime between 8:10 and 8:20 p.m. A 19-year-old male student reported that he left his Samsung cell phone on the second floor of the food court. He returned to the location 10 minutes later to retrieve his phone but could not locate it. He called his phone and somebody answered but did not say anything. The student then sent a text message to his phone and stated that he would pay $10 to get his phone back. Whoever had his phone replied to his text message and said no.
  • Two students reported that someone stole property from their room in Harris Hall sometime between 2:30 and 7:30 a.m. on March 16. One of the students, 18, stated that someone stole both of the students’ Emory cards while they were asleep in the room.

Tuesday, October 7

  • Emory Police Department officers responded to a burglary in progress at 2015 North Decatur Road at the request of DeKalb County on Sept. 22 at 3:29 a.m. EPD officers assisted DeKalb County Police and took the individual into custody at the location. EPD officers also assisted in searching the residence. DeKalb County Police Department is handling the case.
  • A theft occurred from the second floor of the Woodruff Library on Sept. 19 sometime between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. A 19-year-old student told EPD someone stole his $2,000 HP laptop, $100 backpack, $100 TI-83 calculator and mechanical pencils. The student stated that he left his desk in the library to go get something to eat but that when he returned two hours later the library was closed. Security officers allowed him access to the desk he was working at earlier, but his property was missing.
  • EPD officers began looking for a reported missing student on Sept. 24 at 2:05 a.m. after the student’s roommate called to report that the student had not returned home as expected. The roommate called back later to inform EPD that the missing roommate had returned home without any problems.
  • An EPD officer responded to the second floor of the Woodruff P.E. Center on Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. at the request of the Director of Athletics. He turned over a Ziploc bag that he found at the check-in desk, which contained two Zanex pills, which are controlled substance drugs.
  • A 25-year-old female student reported that an individual attempted to solicit money from her in the Suntrust Bank parking lot on Sept. 25 at 8:15 p.m. The student told police that an elderly black male subject with a striped shirt and khakis began to shout “emergency.” The female student approached the subject to see if he was okay, at which point he asked her repeatedly to give him some money. She refused and he left the location. EPD officers were not able to locate the subject.
  • A 19-year-old white male student was cited with public intoxication at Turman South on Sept. 26 at 4:11 a.m. The student had been provided with a safety escort to the location and became uncooperative. When officers arrived at Turman, the student became disorderly and threw down his keys, cell phone and wallet. The student was also found to be carrying a driver’s license that did not belong to him. The student was arrested and taken to DeKalb County Jail.

Friday, April 11

  • A staff member found $30 in the School of Nursing on the ground of a room on the third floor on March 26. She contacted the administrative assistant of the school, who then contacted the Emory Police Department.
  • An officer reported to the Dobbs University Center on March 27 between 2:20 and 2:43 p.m. in response to a report that a woman at the location had been soliciting money. The officer talked with the individual and asked her to leave the location. She is a resident of Decatur and was described as a black female who was wearing a black and pink Hawaiian print outfit.
  • A Residence Life professional contacted EPD on March 27 at 11:08 p.m. regarding an incident at Clairmont Tower. An EPD police officer arrived at Clairmont Tower in response to the call and checked a room after observing a student throwing cigarettes off the balcony of the room. The officer observed a marijuana pipe in plain view and confiscated it.
  • On March 28 at 12:57 a.m., EPD received a report from the Emory University Hospital valet after an individual was involved in a hit and run accident. An officer advised the driver that his license had been suspended and served the driver with a notice that he lacked a social security number and proper identification. The officer confiscated the license.
  • During Dooley’s Ball on March 29 at 12:28 a.m., an officer working the event, held at the Woodruff P.E. Center, became aware of a male student, 20, attempting to start an altercation on the dance floor with another male subject, 20. The student walked outside of the building but tried to re-enter shortly after. He was told that if he attempted to come back in again, he would be charged with public intoxication. He was escorted back to his residence hall. Officers also confiscated his fictitious license and destroyed it.

Tuesday, February 5

  • Emory Police Department received an anonymous report on Jan. 23 at 8:56 p.m. that an unknown individual was attempting to sell fake drivers licenses outside of the Student Academic and Activity Center. The caller described the individual as a male wearing a black T-shirt with a hood. Officers arrived but could not locate the individual.
  • EPD officers arrested a Dominos Pizza delivery driver on Jan. 24 after the subject made an illegal right turn at Asbury Circle. An officer pulled over the male subject, who was driving in excess of 50 mph. The individual also had an outstanding warrant in his name issued by the Sandy Springs Police Department for a previous traffic offense. EPD arrested the man, and his car was impounded.
  • EPD received multiple complaints on Jan. 25 that a man was attempting to solicit money at 1940 Starvine. The individual in question was a white male in his late 40s with gray hair and blue eyes, 5-foot-11 and 210 pounds. When an officer asked the individual to leave he complied.
  • On Jan. 26 at 4:57 a.m., an EPD officer on patrol observed an intoxicated individual at the intersection of Clairmont Road and Starvine Way. The 28-year-old University staff member was transported to his off-campus apartment and charged with public intoxication.
  • A theft of lost property occurred on Jan. 26 between 3 and 4:30 p.m. on the second floor of the intensive care unit at Emory University Hospital. A 29-year-old visitor to the University left a wallet in the family waiting room which contained her driver’s license, insurance card and $240. The total loss is valued at $270.
