Police Record: February 4, 2011

  • As they patrolled the Goizueta Business School on Jan. 28 at 4:08 p.m., Emory Police Department (EPD) officers stopped an individual that they believed had been sleeping in the building, based on descriptions of the subject in previous calls from witnesses. EPD issued the subject a trespass warning and asked him not to return to campus. He was allowed to leave the area that night.
  • EPD officers again found the individual who had received the trespass warning – a black male subject who is approximately 6 feet 2 inches tall and 215 pounds – in Cannon Chapel on Feb. 3 at 11:16 p.m. The officers arrested the subject, who was charged with criminal trespassing and transported to the DeKalb County Jail.
  • A student contacted EPD on Jan. 26 at 3:29 p.m. to report an online scam. She stated that she had found a job, via Craigslist, as a “personal assistant.” The “employer” sent her a check for a large sum of money, requesting that she first deposit it into her checking account and then send a money order to England from her account. She then received a second check and was asked to perform the same set of tasks. But when she tried to deposit the second check, her bank informed her that her account had been put on hold because the first check had bounced. This case is now under investigation.
  • An EPD officer responded to Glenn Memorial Church on Jan. 28 at 1:07 p.m. in response to a call about a suspicious person. According to the caller, a 64-year-old, white male subject had entered the building and then refused to leave when asked. The subject told the EPD officer that he was heading to his car, which was parked at Oxford Road and North Decatur Road, and that he was living at Atlanta Mission. The officer assisted him with locating his vehicle, and he departed campus without further incident.

Police Record: Tuesday, February 23

  • A 21-year-old student and resident of Alabama Hall reported that someone used his EmoryCard sometime between Feb. 9 and Feb. 14 and made substantial charges to the card. The student further stated that he had the card in his possession at the time these charges were made. The information has been reported to Emory Dining.
  • Someone stole a gray and black bicycle from outside of Smith Hall sometime between Feb. 15 at 11:45 a.m. and Feb. 17 at 3:47 p.m. The victim, a female student, reported that the bicycle and the lock were stolen and that the bicycle is valued at $130. The bicycle was purchased at Target, but no other manufacturer information is available at this time.
  • A taxi driver met with Emory Police Department (EPD) officers of Feb. 18 after he discovered that someone had left a black car key in his taxi van on Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. The taxi driver could not remember if the passenger had been male or female. The key has been turned over to EPD for safekeeping.
  • Two students became trapped in an elevator in Clairmont Tower on Feb. 18 at 11:41 p.m. The two students were freed from the elevator by a Schindler employee at 12:10 a.m. The Division of Campus Life was notified of the incident.
  • EPD officers responded to teh fifth floor of Evans and Few Hall on suspicion of a narcotics violation on Feb. 20 at approximately 1:30 a.m. EPD officers knocked on the door of the room in question and made contact with the residents and several other subjects. Officers did not observe any marijuana in plain view, but detected a strong odor of something similar to Febreze in the air. Three of the subjects had bloodshot eyes. Officers identified two male subjects, one 18-year-old female student and resident of Harris Hall and one male student and resident of 4 Eagle Row. The 18-year-old female student originally provided officers with false information, but later provided them with correct information. She stated that she provided them with incorrect information because she was afraid. As EPD officers did not find any marijuana in plain sight, the information has been turned over to the resident adviser at the location.
  • A theft occurred from a second floor room at the Kappa Alpha fraternity house. The 19-year-old male resident of the room reported that someone stole his Sony PlayStation 3, valued at approximately $500, sometime between midnight and approximately 2 a.m. on Feb. 20. The resident further told police that the PlayStation was connected to the television and that the controllers had not been stolen at that time. There were televisions and computers in the room as well, which were not taken. The room was unlocked at the time of the theft.

Police Record: Tuesday, February 9

  • A member of the Greek Life staff observed six private vehicles illegally parked on the lawn of 10 Eagle Row on Jan. 26 at 12:45 p.m. The staff member also reportedly observed 20 to 25 members of Sigma Nu on the porch of the house. The damage to the lawn is unknown at this time.
  • Emory Police Department (EPD) responded to the seventh floor of Clairmont Tower on Jan. 26 at 2:15 p.m. A Residence Life staff member had detected a strong odor of marijuana and staff for the Division of Campus Life entered the room at the location. There were no residents in the room at this time, but the staff members observed that a smoke detector had been covered. They also observed a clear bottle containing green stems and a green leafy substance. The staff members further observed containers of alcohol, mostly beer and whiskey, as well as a grinder. All of the objects smelled of marijuana and were in plain view. The residents of the apartment were identified and the items were confiscated and taken into evidence.
  • EPD received a call from a 29-year-old contract employee on Jan. 27 at midnight, who stated that he was leaving the campus through Eagle Row and saw a large group of male subjects running on Eagle Row and that one subject tried to jump on a car. EPD spoke with the president of Alpha Tau Omega who stated that a small number of brothers had run across the street to sing to their friends.
  • An Emory University Hospital employee called EPD to report an incident of criminal trespassing and property damage, which occurred on Jan. 27 sometime between 5:55 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on the fourth level of Starvine parking deck. The victim stated that when she returned to her 2004 Honda Odyssey, there were scratches to the driver’s side door and other various panels, measuring approximately 12 to 15 inches across. There were no other damages to her vehicle and there were no witnesses to the incident.
  • EPD received a call that a theft by taking occurred on Jan. 27 sometime between 12:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. An Emory student, who lives off campus, stated that he parked his red Schwinn bicycle behind Woodruff Residential Center next to a fence near Lullwater Park. When he returned to the area later that day, his bicycle was missing. However, the student told police that he found it odd that no other bicycles were in the area anymore and that several had been in the same location as his. His bicycle is valued at $130.
  • EPD received a report from an Emory parent on Jan. 27 at 8:10 p.m., who stated that someone had been using his daughter’s EmoryCard since May 1, 2009. The parent further stated that his daughter had not been enrolled in Emory for the last year. He contacted the EmoryCard Office and deactivated the card so that automatic withdrawals could no longer be made. The case has been turned over to an investigator.

Police Record: Friday, January 29

  • A 19-year-old female Emory student contacted the Emory Police Department after someone accessed her OPUS account sometime between Jan. 12 at midnight and Jan. 17 at midnight. The student lives in Woodruff Residential Center, and told EPD that someone used her account to change her class schedule over the break. The student further stated that on a separate occasion, she was using MSN Messenger and believed that she was talking with her mom. However, when she spoke to her mom on the phone later that evening, her mom told her that she had not been communicating on the computer with her daughter. The case is currently under active investigation.
  • EPD officers responded to an altercation that escalated into a case of simple assault on Jan. 15 at 12:05 p.m. at valet parking at the Emory University Hospital. Officers arrived at the location and met with the 27-year-old valet driver, who told officers that a 43-year-old male driver began cussing and complaining about the valet operation. The driver reportedly drover up to the valet attendant and said, “Go back to where you came from, you’re moving too damn slow.” Witnesses at the incident told officers that the driver put his hands on the valet attendant and began pushing him. The case has been turned over to an investigator.
  • EPD responded to the fourth floor of Evans Hall on Jan. 17 at 2 a.m. and made contact with an intoxicated 18-year-old male Emory student. The student was experiencing numbness in his body, and told officers that he had consumed alcohol at Mexico City restaurant and the Phi Delta Theta and Kappa Alpha Order houses. The student was transported to Emory University Hospital and the Division of Campus Life was notified of the incident.
  • EPD responded to a report of public intoxication on Jan. 17 between 3:11 and 3:46 a.m. after an Emory student refused to pay for his cab fare. The 18-year-old student passed out in the back seat of the cab after entering the vehicle at Maggie’s and the cab driver met EPD at the Emory University Hospital. The intoxicated student’s resident adviser met with the cab driver and paid the $21.17 fare. The Division of Campus Life was notified of the incident.
  • EPD received an anonymous report of sexual assault on Jan. 19 at 3:22 p.m. The sexual assault occurred on campus, but there is no further information at this time.

Police Record: Friday, November 20

  • A theft occurred between Sept. 28 at 8 a.m. and Nov. 6 at 9:30 a.m. from the first floor of the Woodruff Memorial Building. Someone stole two Dell Latitude laptops that had been placed in an unsecured drawer. The laboratory where the laptops were located is unsecured after hours. There are no suspects at this time.
  • The Parking Office placed an immobilization boot on a two-door red Acura Integra on Nov. 4 at approximately 7 a.m. The vehicle and the boot were missing later that day. The boot is valued at $500.
  • The Emory University Hospital food court took in two counterfeit $20 bills on Nov. 5 sometime between 6:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. The two bills were given to a cashier at the location and the information has been turned over to a detective.
  • EPD officers responded to a fire alarm at Clairmont Tower on Nov. 5 at 11:24 a.m. A 19-year-old female student on the 19th floor was asleep at the time of the incident, and officers found smoke from the stove had filled the apartment at the location and set off the fire alarm. Facilities Management also arrived at the scene and assisted clearing out the apartment and reset the alarm. The Division of Campus Life was notified.
  • EPD received a call from a complainant at Presidential Park Apartments on Nov. 6 at midnight, who stated that they thought they heard gun shots and tires squealing outside. EPD checked the area but did not find any suspicious activity.
  • EPD received a report of simple assault that occurred on Nov. 6 between midnight and 1:15 a.m. The caller stated that several males were attacking a taxi cab driver outside of 10 Eagle Row. The witness further stated that several students exited a white bus on Eagle Row and started kicking and jumping on the cab. One subject spit on the driver and punched him in the face. EPD officers made contact with that subject, who stated that he had seen the incident but was not a part of it. The driver then identified the subject as the person who spit on him. The taxi driver did not want to press charges at the time of the incident and the information has been turned over to Campus Life.
  • EPD received a report of property damage at the Kappa Sigma house on Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. The complainant, a 19-year-old Emory student, stated that he was at football practice and found the greek Kappa Sigma letters spray painted on the basement door. A resident of the house told EPD that four male students were seen leaving the Beta house and walked to the area earlier in the day. The student further stated that he heard one of those male subjects say “do it on the door.” EPD also observed spray paint on several signs outside. The cost of damages is unknown at this time. Campus Life was notified.

Police Report: Tuesday, November 3

  • Someone stole a 15-inch, $4,800 MacBook laptop from the second floor of the Mathematics and Science Center on Oct. 23 sometime between 1 and 3 p.m. A staff member reportedly saw the laptop on a desk at the location but the laptop was missing when he returned two hours later. The area had not been locked during that time.
  • A burglary occurred on Oct. 24 between 2 and 3 a.m. at 8 Eagle Row. A 21-year-old male student told police that someone entered his room and stole a $150 Apple iPod, $250 speakers, and a $1,300 Apple MacBook computer from a shelf at the location. The victim’s roommate, who lives above him, was there at the time of the theft and told police he thought he heard something during that time but assumed it was his roommate. The victim told police that he normally keeps his door locked, but that it was unlocked at the time of the theft. The case has been turned over to an investigator.
  • A 20-year-old female student received a call from the Emory Credit Union on Oct. 24 at 1:30 p.m. in regards to large purchases made at a Target in Lawrenceville. The student stated that she had not made the purchases, valued at $740, and that she still had her debit card with her. The purchases had been made using her debit card number, but there is no further information at this time. The case has been turned over to an investigator.
  • EPD responded to suspicious activity at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house on Oct. 25 between 12:47 and 12:52 a.m. Officers on a routine patrol heard the sound of glass breaking and went to the pool area of the house. Officers observed members of 14 Eagle Row throwing wine and beer bottles into the pool at 18 Eagle Row. The subjects ran into 14 Eagle Row when officers approached the scene. The Division of Campus Life was notified.
  • On Oct. 25 between 12:47 and 12:52 a.m., EPD officers who had responded to 18 Eagle Row observed a party at the Kappa Alpha Order house, which had not previously been registered. The vice president of KA told officers that he forgot to register the party.
  • EPD received a call from the Houston Mill House on Oct. 25 at 5:55 a.m. Officers responded to the location and identified two subjects asleep in the front seat of a silver Volvo. The male subject awoke at that time and opened the door to the vehicle. He told officers that he was not affiliated with the University but that he lived nearby. The male subject appeared to have been drinking and officers called a taxi to take the two subjects home.
  • Someone stole a Canon camera, valued at $400, from the dining area of the Dobbs University Center on Oct. 26 at approximately 1:20 p.m. The camera belonged to a contractor with Momentum Worldwide, 25, who said he left the area and returned a few minutes later, which is when he discovered the camera was missing.

Tuesday, September 29

  • The Emory Police Department received a report from a 42-year-old female visitor to the University who stated she was the victim of financial transaction card fraud. The visitor, who is a resident of Atlanta, told EPD that she lost her credit card and last saw it at Einstein Brothers Bagels at the Goizueta Business School on Sept. 17 at noon. When she realized her credit card was missing, she called to cancel the card, at which time she was notified that approximately $250 had been spent at the Emory University bookstore. The information has been turned over to a detective.
  • EPD responded to the Dobbs University Center on Sept. 18 at 12:30 p.m. after receiving a report of suspicous activity at the location. EPD officers arrested a 24-year-old male visitor to the University. The subject is described as a male, five-feet-eleven, approximately 170 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. The subject is a resident of Decatur, Ga. EPD arrested the subject because he was carrying a 22-caliber weapon with seven rounds of ammunition. The subject did have a Georgia firearms license withhim, but was arrested for carrying a weapon in a school zone and for creating a hazardous or offensive condition, which is a violation of DeKalb County ordinance.
  • Someone stole a mountain bicycle sometime between Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. and Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. from outside the School of Medicine. The 21-year-old male owner of the bicycle said the bicycle was gone when he returned and that it had been secured with a cable lock. The silver and black Tony Hawk bicycle is valued at $170.
  • EPD responded to the first level of Clairmont Residential Center (CRC) on Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. after receiving a report of suspicious activity. A security officer at the CRC stated someone covered a red Honda CRV with sticky notes. Most of the sticky notes were blank, but some of them had writing on them. EPD officers contacted the owner of the vehicle, who stated that she was aware of the persons who did it and that it was a joke. There were some sticky notes on the car that the owner was not aware of. The owner believes the sticky notes may belong to her roommate and friend who had placed the blank sticky notes on her car. The information has been turned over to an investigator.
  • A 25-year-old student and resident of Decatur reported that someone stole their bicycle on Sept. 21 at 12:45 a.m. The student told EPD that they had parked the bicycle at Rollins around 9 p.m. on Sept. 24 but that the bicycle was missing when they returned. The bicycle is a red and grey Mongoose.

Friday, February 8

• A 20-year-old male student told Emory Police Department that between Jan. 20 at 12:57 p.m. and Jan. 26 at 1:51 p.m., persons unknown used his Emory card identification number to order $36 worth of pizza from Domino’s Pizza. The complainant stated that he had been out of town in Virgini a during the time of the purchases.

• On Jan. 30 at 3:22 a.m. EPD received a report that an individual was trapped on the elevator in the Sigma Delta Tau lodge. DeKalb County Fire Department was notified and was able to evacuate the student. Officers also notified the Schindler Elevator Company and temporarily put the elevator out of service.

• A theft occurred on Jan. 30 12:35 p.m. after a 21-year-old male student left his black Nike book bag in the first floor men’s locker room in the Woodruff P.E. Center. His bag contained his workout clothes and Emory card and the total value of the loss is $380.

• Persons unknown activated a fire alarm from the first floor pull station of Longstreet Hall on Jan. 31 at 11:07 p.m. There were no signs of smoke or fire and EPD determined that it was a false alarm. The Division of Campus Life was also notified.

• Another false fire alarm was reported at 11:25 p.m. on Jan. 31 from Means Hall. The pull station on the first floor was activated, but there were no signs of smoke or fire in the building. After the fire alarm went off, several students did not leave the building and had to be asked to evacuate. No one has admitted to activating the alarm.

• On Feb. 1 at 10:20 p.m., a resident advisor in Harris Hall discovered a McDonough Field sign lying adjacent to the exterior of the building. An officer arrived at the location and returned the sign.

Tuesday, February 5

  • Emory Police Department received an anonymous report on Jan. 23 at 8:56 p.m. that an unknown individual was attempting to sell fake drivers licenses outside of the Student Academic and Activity Center. The caller described the individual as a male wearing a black T-shirt with a hood. Officers arrived but could not locate the individual.
  • EPD officers arrested a Dominos Pizza delivery driver on Jan. 24 after the subject made an illegal right turn at Asbury Circle. An officer pulled over the male subject, who was driving in excess of 50 mph. The individual also had an outstanding warrant in his name issued by the Sandy Springs Police Department for a previous traffic offense. EPD arrested the man, and his car was impounded.
  • EPD received multiple complaints on Jan. 25 that a man was attempting to solicit money at 1940 Starvine. The individual in question was a white male in his late 40s with gray hair and blue eyes, 5-foot-11 and 210 pounds. When an officer asked the individual to leave he complied.
  • On Jan. 26 at 4:57 a.m., an EPD officer on patrol observed an intoxicated individual at the intersection of Clairmont Road and Starvine Way. The 28-year-old University staff member was transported to his off-campus apartment and charged with public intoxication.
  • A theft of lost property occurred on Jan. 26 between 3 and 4:30 p.m. on the second floor of the intensive care unit at Emory University Hospital. A 29-year-old visitor to the University left a wallet in the family waiting room which contained her driver’s license, insurance card and $240. The total loss is valued at $270.
