Police Report: February 11, 2011

• A male student contacted the Emory Police Department (EPD) on Feb. 3 at approximately 11:30 a.m. and stated that when he had attempted to pick up a package that had been delivered to him at the Dobbs University Center (DUC) post office, it appeared that some unknown, unauthorized person had already retrieved the package. The student stated that he had received an e-mail that the package had arrived at the DUC, but when he entered his student ID number at the post office to claim the item, someone else had already taken it. The package contained a music history anthology book, valued at $35, that the student had ordered online. The case has been turned over to an investigator.

• EPD officers responded to a call about the odor of marijuana at Clifton Tower on Feb. 5 at 6:55 p.m. When the officers arrived at the location, they performed a check of the room and cited two residents for possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. The officers also confiscated four waterpipes, two hookahs, three grinders and an oxygen mask, as well as three Mason jars and one Super Nintendo joystick that had been used as pipes.

• A male caller contacted EPD on Feb. 6 to report that, as he was crossing the bridge from the Michael Street parking deck toward Longstreet-Means Hall between 8:30 and 8:49 a.m., he had found a plastic bag of a substance suspected to be marijuana. He had placed the bag on a pole near Longstreet-Means Hall before calling EPD. No one was around at the time the bag was found. EPD officers later located the bag, which contained less than one ounce of marijuana.

• EPD officers responded to a 911 call from building B of the Undergraduate Residential Center on Clairmont Campus on Feb. 8 between 1:30 and 2:30 a.m. The call came from a female student who stated that she and her boyfriend had had an argument. The student’s boyfriend was not at the location when the officers arrived. The student was not interested in pursuing any charges, and she did not appear to have any injuries. The case has been turned over to Campus Life and an investigator.

Police Record: October 15, 2010

  • Emory Police Department (EPD) officers and Emory Emergency Medical Services (EEMS) responded to a report of a person down at Harris Hall on Oct. 8 at 1:19 a.m. The incident was alcohol-related and involved underage possession of alcohol. EEMS evaluated the female student found at the location, but she refused transport to a hospital. A Campus Life professional at the site was notified of the incident.
  • A research specialist at Emory Clinic Building B reported a theft to EPD on Oct. 8 at 1:14 p.m. The researcher stated that his black SanDisk flash drive, which had been secured to a lanyard, had been stolen two weeks before the report of the theft. The flash drive had been connected to his computer at the time of the incident and contained personal information and college transcripts.
  • DeKalb County police officers responded to a robbery at the Domino’s Pizza store in Emory Village on Oct. 9 at 3:42 a.m. EPD officers assisted in the search for the subjects who had committed the robbery. No one was injured.
  • EPD officers responded to a dispute between a taxi driver and his customers, who were Emory students, at the Beta Theta Pi house on Oct. 10 at 3:27 a.m. The student stated that they thought they owed the driver $27 for the ride from Buckhead to Eagle Row, whereas the driver stated that he thought the students owed him $33. The disagreement was regarding a $2 charge per additional passenger. The students stated that seven passengers had been in the taxi, but the driver stated that there had been 13. The driver ultimately accepted $33, ending the dispute.

Police Record: Tuesday, February 2

  • On Jan. 19, a male Emory student reported a financial transaction fraud that occurred on Dec. 4. The student stated that his Emory Credit Union checking account had been accessed by someone and used to pay for a Georgia Power utility bill. The information has been turned over to an investigator and there are no suspects at this time.
  • Emory Police Department (EPD) received a complaint from a male Emory student on Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. The student stated that someone entered his room on campus and stole his black leather wallet, which contained his credit cards, $20 in cash, gift cards and his Wachovia bank card. The total theft is valued at $122.
  • EPD responded to a non-violent domestic incident on Jan. 21 at 2:05 a.m. between a male subject, 24, and a female Emory student. The male subject told police that his girlfriend was an Emory student and that he was concerned for her safety. Officers checked the location and discovered that the female student was fine and with her friends, and that she was no longer the subject’s girlfriend. Officers then issued the male subject a criminal trespass warning because the female student had previously asked him not to make contact with her.
  • EPD received a noise complaint on Jan. 21 at 11:17 p.m. from the 600 block of Lucky Lane. The caller stated that there was a loud party going on and that people were drinking in the streets. The residents of the location, a 21-year-old student and a 22-year-old student, cooperated with officers and confirmed that the party had taken place at the location but that people had left already.
  • A theft of services occurred on Jan. 22 between 3:24 and 3:45 a.m. after an Emory student refused to pay his cab fare. A cab driver for the Royal Cab Company told police the subject ran into 15 Eagle Row and officers made contact with the student at that location. The student told officers that he thought some girls had paid for his cab fare, and further stated that he was not a resident of 15 Eagle Row, but that he lived off-campus. The student met with the cab driver and agreed to pay the additional $9. The subject was escorted by his friend to his off-campus housing.
  • EPD received a report of a dispute that occurred between a Nored Security Supervisor and a 35-year-old Emory student on Jan. 22 at 7:34 a.m. The student attempted to use an expired tag to enter one of the parking decks on campus and was denied access. The student was given instructions on how to renew the tag but there was no further contact between the individuals.

Police Record: Tuesday, January 26

  • Someone stole a bicycle from an 18-year-old Emory student sometime between Dec. 13 at 12 p.m. and Jan. 13 at 9:30 p.m. The blue Mongoose mountain bicycle had been secured to the rack by a cable lock. The bicycle is valued at $150 and the cable lock is valued at $10.
  • Emory Police Department received a reckless driving complaint from a female resident of Atlanta on Jan. 13 at 11:21 p.m. The female caller stated that she was driving southbound on Clairmont Road when a garbage truck, traveling northbound on Clairmon Road, dumped trash and debris on her vehicle, damaging the front windshield. The garbage truck then struck a utility pole and several traffic lights before stopping at the Emory University Hospital. EPD officers made contact with the garbage truck driver at that location, who told officers that he did not remember hitting anything. The female caller identified the driver as the driver in question, and EPD received a confirmation from Decatur Police Department that the garbage truck had caused extensive damages. The case has been turned over to Decatur Police Department.
  • EPD received a report of reckless driving that occurred in front of the Zeta Beta Tau house on Jan. 14 at midnight. A staff member told police that she had to move out of the crosswalk quickly to keep from getting hit. The staff member further reported that the vehicle was a white Audi, and the driver was a white male subject. The information has been turned over to an investigator.
  • A 26-year-old School of Law student was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Ridgewood Drive and North Decatur Road on Jan. 14 at 7:11 p.m. EPD officers responded to the incident at the request of DeKalb County Fire Department and DeKalb County Police Department, who had already responded to the location. The student was treated on the scene but refused transportation to the hospital for further treatment. The Division of Campus Life was notified of the incident.
  • EPD received a call from a female resident of Atlanta on Jan. 15 at 9:22 a.m. who stated that she was walking in Lullwater Park, near the pond closest to Clairmont Campus, when a dump truck unloaded its contents where she was walking. The caller told EPD that she believes the act was unintentional, but that she was going to file a complaint anyway. EPD arrived at the location and met with the landscaping company that owned the dump truck. The company’s supervisor told officers that they were working on drainage in the area. The individual who had unloaded the debris on the complainant was not at the scene when EPD arrived, and there is no further information at this time.
  • On Jan. 15 at 4:55 a.m., EPD officers assisted DeKalb County Police Department after they identified an intoxicated 20-year-old male student, originally from Texas, at 1362 North Decatur Road. The student was cited for public intoxication at that time.

Police Record: Friday, December 4

  • A 19-year-old male Emory student notified Emory Police Department that a burglary had occurred at Clifton Tower on Oct. 25 at approximately 1:30 a.m. The student stated that someone stole his silver MacBook Pro computer out of the common area in his apartment at the location. The student further stated that his apartment door was unlocked when he returned and discovered the computer was missing. He told EPD that he failed to report the theft earlier because he had been busy with tests.
  • EPD received a report of property damage at the Alpha Tau Omega house on Nov. 20 at 11:47 a.m. Someone reportedly drew a picture of a penis and testicles and wrote the word “F–K” on the house. The house manager at the location was informed of the graffiti.
  • EPD identified a 20-year-old Emory student unconscious in a restroom in Few Hall on Nov. 21 at 3:30 a.m. The student had previously been found outside of the residence hall and had been helped inside by other Emory students. Emory Emergency Medical Services arrived at the location and transported the student to Emory University Hospital.
  • EPD received a call from a 20-year-old female Emory student on Nov. 22 at 4:57 p.m. who stated that she was at Starvine Parking Deck and wanted to file a complaint about an aggressive driver. The student, who was driving a Honda Civic, stated that another driver jumped in front of her vehicle at a light while she was driving, causing her to slam on her brakes. The driver of that vehicle, a black Lexus, then followed her to the entrance of Starvine Parking Deck, exited his vehicle and approached the student while she was in her vehicle. The male subject reportedly waved his finger in her face and told her that she had endangered him and his family, who was in his vehicle. She replied that he had almost caused an accident by cutting her off at the light, and informed him that she would be calling the police. The male subject then called her an idiot, but left the area without further incident. The student’s 24-year-old sister was also in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
  • A 20-year-old Emory student reported that someone damaged his black 2006 Acura at Fishburne Parking Deck on Nov. 23 at approximately 1 p.m. The vehicle’s window had been broken, and the damage is valued at $250.
  • EPD officers met with the Dobbs University Center (DUC) student manager on Nov. 23 after the student reportedly saw the same male subject sleeping in the DUC on various occassions. The student described the subject as an older, black male subject wearing khakis and a white shirt who had been at the DUC every night for the past week. The same subject has also been seen in the library. EPD officers located the subject in question at Cox Hall, and determined that his son, a professor at Georgia Tech, had been dropping the male subject off at Emory on his way to work and picking him up after work. The male subject appeared to be unattended and disoriented, and officers called his son, the Georgia Tech professor, to pick him up from the location. The male subject was otherwise coherent and did not seem to have any physical disabilities. The 73-year-old male subject and his son are residents of Stone Mountain, Ga.

Police Record: Tuesday, November 17

  • Emory Police Department received a report from the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Administration Building on Nov. 2 between 6:22 and 6:50 p.m. Someone reported that that a 6 foot subject with brown hair and a mullet was trying to enter different doors at the location. EPD officers responded to the location but could not locate the subject. The subject had previously told the female complainant that he was involved in a study at the location. He was last seen in an elevator in the building.
  • EPD received a report of criminal trespassing and property damage on the first floor of Dobbs Hall that occurred on Nov. 3 between 8 and 11 a.m. A female student from Florida reported that someone wrote “b—h” in black on a display board outside of her room at the location. The information has been turned over to Residence Life.
  • On Nov. 3 at 1 p.m., a student reported that they had previously become involved in a heated discussion with another student at Tarbutton Hall. The student further stated that they felt ill after the discussion, but had not sustained any bodily injuries during the interaction.
  • An 18-year-old male Emory student reported that someone walked into his room, damaged the screen on his computer, and put the computer back in the same place on Nov. 4 between 10:20 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The student expressed the possibility that a visitor may have inadvertently damaged the computer and did not report the damage to him.
  • EPD officers responded to Presidential Park Apartments on Nov. 5 at 12:47 a.m. after receiving a  report of a suspicious person at the location. The individual in question is a black male subject, 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs approximately 155 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a white shirt and jeans. The subject had been in the foyer of the building but was not a resident of the building. Officers made contact with the individual, who was not able to provide them with identification. The subject stated that he had a friend that lived in the building but could not say where this friend lived. He further stated that he did not think that anyone lived in the area because there were no vehicles outside. EPD officers issued the subject a criminal trespass warning and a citation for loitering, and his court date was set for Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. EPD was later advised by DeKalb County Police Department that the subject also had marijuana on his person at the time of his arrest. The subject was further charged with possession of less than one ounce of marijuana while in DeKalb County Jail. The subject also had multiple blue and yellow empty plastic bags on him at that time.

Friday, October 2

  • Someone stole a bicycle from the bicycle rack at the Goizueta Business School sometime between Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. and Sept. 21 at 9 a.m. The victim, a male student, reportedly secured his red, white and black Fuji Odessa mountain bicycle to the bicycle rack with a cable lock. The bicycle and cable lock are valued at $430.
  • The Emory Police Department received a report from that two female students refused to pay their taxi fare on Sept. 19 at 6:25 a.m. The taxi reportedly drove them from Oxford College to the main Emory campus. One student told the taxi driver that she was told that an officer would be waiting at the location to pay their taxi fare. EPD spoke with the taxi driver on Sept. 22 at 8:11 p.m. and discovered that one of the female students did pay the driver for the outstanding fare.
  • EPD responded to 17 Eagle Row on Sept. 19 at 9:30 p.m. after a 19-year-old male student reported that someone shattered his rearview window on his vehicle. The male student stated that he had parked his ES 300 Lexus at approximately 6 p.m. and that he observed the damage when he returned. The total damage is approximately $500.
  • Officers responded to a group of unruly male subjects at 17 Eagle Row on Sept. 20 at 1:25 a.m. Individuals from 15 Eagle Row were reportedly making threatening calls and  yelling obscenities to the individuals at 17 Eagle Row, although there was not actual contact between individuals of the two groups. Officers identified the presidents of each fraternity house, who advised officers that they would meet with the members of their respective fraternities. The Division of Campus Life was notified of the incident.
  • Several vehicles at Bud Terrace at Wesley Woods were damaged when a tree fell at the location during a storm on Sept. 21 at approximately 6 p.m. The tree fell on a 2009 white Mercedes, although the car did not appear to be damaged at that time. Officers identified the owner of the Mercedes as a hospital staff member. The tree also hit a 2004 gold Honda Accord, damaging the front windshield. Officers were unable to identify the owner of the Honda Accord at that time. The tree also struck and damaged a green Honda Civic, belonging to a visitor to the center. The tree also hit a 2002 Ford Ranger, causing major damage to the truck bed and hood.
  • EPD assisted DeKalb County Fire Department with a hot power line at the 1599 Clifton Road Building on Sept. 22 between 2:30 p.m. and midnight. The power line was lying on the northbound sidewalk and EPD had to close the entrance to the Emory Hotel and Conference Center. Officers on the scene contacted Georgia Power, who responded to the location. EPD officers also blocked off the sidewalk at the location. The hot power line did spark a small fire in the pine needles surrounding the area, but that fire was extinguished. Officers determined that the power line belonged to AT&T.

Friday, September 25

  • A taxi driver called Emory Police Department on Sept. 13 at 2:35 a.m. from Woodruff Residential Center. An officer met with the taxi driver at 3:23 a.m. and the taxi driver informed the officer that he had just dropped off a female student at the location but believes that they were followed by an unidentified male subject. The taxi driver stated that he picked up the female student at Maggie’s, along with a second male student. In the parking lot at Maggie’s, a Hispanic male subject, approximately 37-years-old, insisted he knew the female student and attempted to leave Maggie’s with her. The female student was intoxicated but said that she did not know the male subject. The taxi driver saw the same male subject sitting in a red truck in the parking lot of Woodruff Residential Center, although he claimed to be waiting for his girlfriend. The taxi driver told the subject that he was calling the police, at which point the subject drove away. The Division of Campus Life and a detective were notified.
  • EPD took a report from a Decatur’s Best taxi driver on Sept. 13 at 8:27 p.m. The taxi driver stated that he picked up a male and female from Zaya restaurant and drove them to Clairmont Tower. They went inside and never came back out to pay their fare. The female student was approximately 19-years-old. Campus Life may have been able to get more information about the individuals involved in the incident.
  • Someone stole a bicycle from outside of the Woodruff P.E. Center on Sept. 14 sometime between 10:50 and 11:30 a.m. The 21-year-old male victim, who is a student, stated that he secured the silver and blue Trek mountain bicycle with a chain and combination lock at the location. The bicycle and the lock were missing when the student returned.
  • EPD received a report of simply battery that occurred between two individuals on Sept. 15 at 9:45 a.m. The two individuals live in the same household, and the incident occurred at Clinic B. One individual obtained a warrant for the other individual. Both individuals are residents of Convington, Ga. The warrant was given to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department to be served.
  • A theft occurred at the Dobbs University Center in room 250. A staff member stated that someone stole a $1,400 laptop and an $800 projector sometime between 8:15 and 8:45 a.m. on Sept. 16. The projector and computer had been set up in a conference room for a meeting.

Tuesday, September 22

  • Emory Police Department responded to the 1599 Clifton Road building on Sept. 9 at 4:58 a.m. and found a 19-year-old male student sleeping on the sidewalk. The student was disoriented and could not answer the officers’ questions. Emory Emergency Medical Services responded and transported the student to Emory University Hospital for further treatment. The Division of Campus Life was notified.
  • Two Sodexo employees, a female employee and a supervisor, became involved in a dispute at Cox Hall on Sept. 11. EPD arrived at Cox Hall at 2:49 p.m. but the individuals had left the location already. EPD officers referred the incident back to Sodexo managers.
  • EPD received an animial complaint from an anonymous caller on Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. The caller stated that someone left a dog in a vehicle in Peavine Parking Deck. The vehicle had an Arizona lisence plate. The caller further stated that the dog did not have any food or water in the car and that it was very hot. EPD checked the area for the owner of the vehicle. Officers also spoke with someone who stated that they heard the dog barking a couple of hours earlier. EPD officers were able to identify the owner of the vehicle.
  • EPD responded to a call of persons down due to alcohol intoxication at Clairmont Tower on Sept. 13 at 1:35 a.m. Emory Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene as well. A 19-year-old female student stated that she began drinking in a residence hall, left campus and returned to Emory, at which point she began to feel extremely ill. The Residence Hall Director and the Division of Campus Life were notified.
  • EPD responded to a report of persons down due to alcohol intoxication at Harris Hall on Sept. 13 at 3:23 a.m. An 18-year-old male student at the location was disoriented and slow to respond, but was able to stand up and walk around. He was transported to Emory University Hospital. The Residence Hall Director and the Director of Campus Life were notified.
  • EPD responded to an event on the third floor of White Hall on Sept. 13 at 4:25 p.m. An intoxicated male visitor to the University disrupted the event at the location and reportedly said rude things to the group. He was escorted out of the area by officers and complied with their request to leave the location. The subject could not provide the officers with identification, but told them that he came to the event with someone. He left in a cab and did not return to the event.
  • EPD received an animal complaint on Sept. 13 between 6 p.m. and 8:07 p.m. The female student stated that she lives off campus and was in Lullwater Park with her three-year-old dog when it broke free from its leash and ran into the woods. The dog is a boxer and hound mix. The student was not able to locate her dog but told officers that it has tags and a microchip for identification.

Tuesday, September 8

  • Emory Police Department (EPD) responded to Kyoto Joe’s at the request of DeKalb County Police Department on Aug. 28 at 11:39 p.m. DeKalb County Police Department officers had stopped a vehicle at the location and had identified the driver and passengers at Emory students. Officers identified two 19-year-old females, three 19-year-old males and one other student. All of the students were cited for not wearing a seatbelt, and one of the female students was cited for littering at the location. The driver was issued a second citation for creating a hazardous or offensive condition as well.
  • On Aug. 30 at 3:42 a.m., EPD officers responded to Woodruff Residential Center and found a 19-year-old female student lying on the second floor near the elevator. Emory Emergency Medical Services was called. The female student said that she had taken three to four shots of vodka in her own room and that she didn’t need medical help. The student was left in the care of her roommate at the location. The Division of Campus Life was notified.
  • EPD responded to an incident at Clifton Tower Apartments on Aug. 30 between 6:09 a.m. and 6:54 a.m. after a girlfriend and boyfriend got into a dispute. Someone reported that the boyfriend was being loud and disorderly and officers who arrived at the location detected the odor of alcohol on him. The two students told officers that they had become involved in an argument earlier that evening at a party. The student was returned to his residence and the information has been turned over to the Division of Campus Life.
  • EPD received a report that one of the Cliff shuttles was on fire at the intersection of Clifton Road and Briarcliff Road. EPD officers arrived at the location on Aug. 31 at 10:56 p.m. at the request of DeKalb County Police Department’s vehicular fire call. The Motorolla radio on the Cliff transport bus had caught on fire, but the fire was limited to that location and did not spread to the rest of the bus. The fire was extinguished by the time EPD arrived and the bus was towed from the location.
